Delta Gamma Art Gallery

A major donation from Delta Gamma alumnae helped fund the University of Toronto Art Centre, which opened in 1996. The sisters wanted to give a substantial and meaningful donation to commemorate the Fraternity’s 65 years as part of the University community. One of the eight galleries in the Art Centre is named the Delta Gamma Gallery.

Over many decades, the University of Toronto accumulated over 5,000 works of art – paintings, prints, drawings and sculptures. Delta Gamma recognized the urgent need for a permanent art centre to house, exhibit, and manage this large collection. Among the most celebrated works is the collection of Canadian art at University College, and the Malcove Collection of Medieval and Byzantine art.

Since its creation, the Art Centre has functioned as a place for student activities and research. It has organized important exhibitions, special lectures, developed publications to accompany temporary exhibitions, and makes the University Collections available to the visiting public.

The Art Centre has received the coveted “A” designation from Heritage Canada, which indicates that it meets the highest standards for environmental control, security and handling. The designation enables it to host visiting exhibitions from world-class art institutions.
